KontraS slams Granting Remission for Pollycarpus

Jakarta - The Commission for Disappearances and Victims of Violence (Kontras) criticized the granting remission 9 months 5 days to Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, the convicted murder of human rights activist, Munir. Convict 20-year prison sentence was reduced because he was active in Boy Scouts and diligent blood donors.

"It is really too much of our legal system, especially in terms of remission. It's hard feeling to be able to understand why Pollycarpus remission 9 months just for participating Scouts and diligent in blood donors as a prisoner," said Coordinator KontraS, Haris Azhar, told AFP by electronic mail, Wednesday (17/08/2011).

According to Haris, remissions for Pollycarpus really ironic. "To kill Munir far more cruel and unbalanced if it should be reduced criminal just for participating Scouts and blood donors. There is no logical ties between the murder case with blood donors or the Boy Scouts," said Haris.

Punishment up to 20 years to convict, said Haris, is assumed to improve themselves so as not to repeat their crimes after serving their sentences. Therefore, active in the Boy Scouts does not guarantee Pollycarpus will not repeat the crime again. "As a BIN agent he killed, especially if it's just a Boy Scout. It was just symbolic," he said.

Seeing remissions, said Harris, the public should be wary of trying to murder Munir forgotten by the government. "Or is the power behind Polly is still working to clean up traces of the murder of Munir, one of which immediately frees Polly," he said.
